It's Okay Y'all - The World Did Not End!
Have you ever found yourself in a situation wherein you feel like you've let yourself or others down? If you haven't, wow, that's pretty darn amazing! If - like me - you have found yourself in that exact space at one time or another, then here's a phrase for you: "It's okay - the world did not end!" Seems like a pretty simple and logical truth, right? So then why is it so difficult for us to forgive ourselves and move forward?
What would happen if we were to practice self-love by reminding ourselves that the weight of the world is indeed not set upon our shoulders? What would happen if we allowed ourselves the grace we need to surrender our ego and take action instead? Would the world end at that point??? Not NO, but HECK NO!!!
I think that's both the point and the key--knowing that the world's existence does not depend upon our measly little everyday actions or inactions. In fact, it's kind of pompous to think otherwise. Not to say that you and I are such prideful people. Perhaps it's just our ego's need for love and acceptance that results in our feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. And this is why we get to remind ourselves "It's okay - the world did not end!"
In practice, this phrase has always helped me to shift from anxiety to action. Knowing that my ego is only trying to protect me by overwhelming me with those thoughts and emotions, I also know that it is not in control. I am the one who gets to choose my story, not my ego. I get to acknowledge its feelings, then turn around and feed it with positive affirmations instead of irreverent non-truths.
I am loved. I am trusted. I am worthy.
*How will you practice self-forgiving love this week? If you're not quite ready to leave the old story of inadequacy and disappointment behind, just remember that "It's okay - the world will not end!" And hopefully, you'll soon choose to step in front of your ego and tell it a new story of love and acceptance.
